Mistakes Can Shatter Lives…

Following the results of the official investigation into the death of Jimmy Brownlie here is a message from Carl Platt.  Please take the time to read this and share with all your colleagues.

As many of you may know, CEMEX has cooperated fully to ensure that a thorough and detailed investigation has been undertaken by the Health & Safety Executive and Procurator Fiscal during their inquiry into the tragic death of Jimmy Brownlie at our West Calder Block Plant on 13th May 2017.

Following a court hearing on 7th October 2019, CEMEX is required to pay a financial penalty in respect of the incident.

Everyone at CEMEX was devastated about what happened to Jimmy, particularly those who worked with him at the plant and as part of the Building Products business unit.

The conclusion of this case is an opportunity for us all to remember Jimmy and to reflect on the critical nature of our approach to safety. The health and safety of those in our workplaces must always be our first priority – above anything else – because the consequences if we do not put safety first can be fatal.

Please look out for those who work at and visit our sites. STEP IN, STOP AND THINK, and make safety a personal responsibility, so that together we can ensure that there is no repeat of what happened to Jimmy.

The HSE website is a good place to look for posters and campaigns to spread the word in your workplace:  http://www.hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives/industry-construction.htm#js_resources1
