Health & Safety

The Nights are Closing In…

The clocks go back by an hour at the end of the week, resulting in darker evenings.  As a consequence there is a greater risk of injury on the roads.  In 2013 pedestrian deaths rose from 38 in October to 53 in November and cyclist fatalities increased from 4 to 13 over the same two months.  To help keep our roads safe motorists should:

  • Ensure they have a clear field of vision – All windows should be clean, fully demisted and completely cleared of ice or snow.
  • Check vehicle lights – Carry out daily checks to ensure all your lights are working.
  • Beware of road conditions – Cold and damp conditions change the road surface and can make manoeuvres more treacherous. Ensure your speed matches the conditions.
  • Take your time – At junctions ensure you take sufficient time to check the road is clear before pulling out, in particular, look out for cyclists in the low light conditions.
  • Take a note of danger points – Take extra care where there may be additional hazards such as near crossing points, schools, etc.
  • Keep a look out for more vulnerable road users – Be particularly vigilant looking for pedestrians and cyclists and give them plenty of space.

As a cyclist or pedestrian, ensure you can be seen in the dark – wear reflective and light coloured clothing.  On a bike ensure your lights are in good working order.
